We left the Hostal early, hoping to get most of our walk over before the heat set in. That's been the goal for the passed few days. Man, it's been hot!
Anyway, the walk out of Ponferrada was like the walk out of any other big city...long and uninspiring, but, with determination and focus, we put it behind us soon enough. The walk to Cacabelos was for the most part...flat and on pavement. However, it was rather pleasant because of the cool morning air and the country side and the little towns we passed through. And, the Peregrinos we met along the way
In one village, An older gentleman let me take his photo and wished me a Buen Camino as I went on my way. A little further down the street, I spotted an older woman sweeping the street in front of her house..little did I know it was a mere front for a hidden sidewalk business:). I asked her if I could take her photo, she said yes and after I took it, she showed me what she was really up to....selling fresh cherry's, mixed nuts and some other weird thing that I can't remember. Well, I got a small bag o' cherries and gave her 3 €. She's only trying to earn some money.
Wasn't long before we walked into Cacabelos. It is a charming little town with quite a few albergues, hostels and hotels and restaurants. However, we were commited to staying in the municiple albergue, so we walked on and on, straight through town, across the bridge and finally found the albergue on the grounds of a very old church..oh boy! The description in the book stated 2 beds per room. Check out the photos that look like storage lockers..yep..those are the rooms. Sharon said maybe they were monks rooms and I said nope! Monks rooms had windows....these did not. A lot of the pilgrims staying there, including us, kept the door open all night.
Interestingly, the two times we've stayed at strange albergues are the times we've slept the best. We've stayed at more than 2 strange places, but the muni in Cacabelos and the parochial in Tosantos were the most unique.
Life on Camino is good
