We left our storage locker room before sunrise which here in Spain is bout 6:15am. The walk for the most part was pleasant...lots of roadside and on pavement and through vineyards on dirt and dusty roads.
A few weeks ago and just exactly where I can't remember, we met this wonderful Australian family. There's Lionel & his wife, Janice and their two grown daughters Belinda and I don't remember the other girl's name. Anyway, we've been leapfrogging them across Spain and we met up with them again in Cacabelos (they stayed in the storage lockers also), and walked with them for awhile on our way to Pereje. Lionel told me about some of the nicknames his sister calls him. She sometimes says to him "that's dande Lion". Get it? Do ya? I thought it was hysterical...but then I'm on Camino. It's an altered universe.
We managed to get through Villafranca de Berieze without any problems and walked the rest of the way to Pereje alongside a kinda busy road. It was pretty safe cause there was a concrete barrier between us and the oncoming cars traveling at breakneck speeds (or so it seemed). However, to our left was a beautiful river that we followed the whole way. If we focused on that, we could ignore the cars. The other cool thing was...people in cars passing us would honk, wave and some would call out " Buen Camino"!
We arrived at the municiple albergue in Pereje fairly early and got the pick of the beds. Check out the photos...it was lovely and no bunks. We had a wonderful dinner with Diane from Pennsylvania and Peter from central Australia, where there are lots of poisonous snakes and he is terrified of snakes. I asked why doesn't he move...he looked at me rather puzzled and said,.."I don't know". He also has some rather interesting creatures passing through his garden. He showed us a photo of a giant (at least 5 feet long...his description) lizard. It really was quite beautiful.
Well, that's it for now. We are very close to Galicia and can expect a dramatic change in the weather. Sharon will no doubt pull out her longjohns again.
More next time I have WIFI.
