Shell Ceremony

On Sunday, April 28th, Sharon & I did a walk with the Portlandia chapter of the American Pilgrims on the Camino (APOC).  At the end of these walks (held monthly), we have "shell ceremonies" for those pilgrims leaving within the month on their pilgrimages.  This time, Sharon & I, along with 12 other pilgrims, received our shells.

The cockle shell has become a symbol of the Camino.  In the beginning, the shells were taken home as proof of having walked not only to Santiago, but all the way to Finisterre, also believed to be the end of the world.  People have been walking the Camino since 800AD.  Over time, the shells, worn on backpacks, identify one as being a modern day pilgrim

I'm feeling so privileged being able to walk this ancient path, through a breathtakingly beautiful country and through time and history.
