The walk was short, but sweet...a mere 10k. Started out in the cloudy 45 degree weather. We walked through verdant fields of new wheat crops and vineyards. Oh! The joy of walking, feeling strong, alive and so blessed being able to go this at our age!
We walked from Ventosa to Najera and are now ensconced in a delightful private room with a semi- Private bath. A little over budget, but we deserve it after 5 nights in albergues. The one that really tested our resolve and put Carla over the edge was in Viana. That one was modern, cold and crowded and stuffy and smelly and noisy. We were in a room with 18 other pilgrims...4 of whom were women...the rest were half naked, hairy men. Carla woke dreaming she was on a yachat in the south of France, when she realized the gentle rocking motion was in fact not a yachat, but the TWO people in the bunk above her ....were "shagging"!
In Logrono, we stayed in the municipal albergue that was also crowded, stuffy and smelly and noisey. However, we met some really nice pilgrims...Brian who was widowed 15 months ago is struggling with a new relationship...Barbara from Melbourne did the walk 7 years ago and is back struggling with many of he same issues. She and I are so much alike, it's a little scary. Then there was Jonathan from Amsterdam...huge blisters and wonderful, long dread locks and a full beard. Nice young man...
All in all, we are doing well and getting stronger. Sharon's right leg continues to be stiff and sore, but she soldiers on at a pace that is good for her. My left foot is almost pain free.
We are six days away from Burgos and the beginning of the Meseta...Oh God!
